Marketing on Social Media alone will get you nowhere

Over the past couple of days I have been travelling throughout the city of Calgary meeting with many small business owners about online marketing and yesterday I ran across something while visiting with a respected mentor of mine here in the city.

He had a proposal from a social media consultant.  A social media consultant from here in the city of Calgary who I am aware of and ran across from time to time.

Here is excerpt from the proposal that my colleague shared with me.

“With social media you can abandon all other forms of marketing.  When your business focuses on social media a wealth of opportunities exist to reach new markets and new people.”

WTF!

What do you think?

I have my opinions but would love to hear from you.

WTF is also my reaction. You’d be insane to give up your other methods of marketing :P

Talk about putting your eggs all in one basket! I would say that even if you only marketed your products or services online you would still want to use a minimum of 3 or four other tactics. Some people act like social media makes all other forms of marketing obsolete. It may be powerful, but there are lots of other tactics that still work. Social media works well as a part of an overall marketing strategy.

I agree, but am still new at all this.
I just got involved in network marketing with Visalus' Body by Vi 90 day Challenge.
I have not yet advertised other than my own weight results on Facebook, and have brought in 30 cutomers in my firast 3 months alone, which had given me bonus after bonus after bonus. All that, AND My wife and I lost the weight we wanted to, which was the primary goal. I may be totally in left field as for what you are talking about, and maybe its a whole different ” marketing” here, but so far, social media networking alone has helped me immensely!

Social Media is a great tool albeit, one of many. There remains many a client (us older people) that does not spend a lot of time on the computer. To reach this clientele other methods of marketing necessarily need to be employed. And then there are those, like me, that have minimal skills at social media resulting in frustration manoeuvering about the sites.
Don’t neglect this segment of the market, we still buy green bananas.

It seems kind of presumptuous for someone to claim that social media is the end-all, be-all for marketing and that no further efforts in the other areas of marketing are required.
There will always be a need for offline marketing, and most especially, for personal and direct communications that are best made in-person and through other more traditional ways.
It would be a sad world to reduce the previous 5,000 years plus of human experience (and practicality) to the fashion of relying only on electronic social media.

"Being slightly overwhelmed by all of the social media that we are told by speakers to engage in - I held off taking the step to get started. After meeting Stuart I am no longer afraid of social media and I am actually excited to get things on the move with blogging, twitter-ing (not too sure on the terminology yet) and updates using Hoot.

Stuart took time out of his schedule to come to my office and run through the programs with me that way I saw it run on my computer rather than his, it was great and he answered all of my questions and trust me - there were questions!! I have also emailed him with questions since I have had a chance to play with things a little bit - and he is prompt with his responses with explainations.

I would recommend Stuart again because he was great and easy to deal with - plus he continues to be there for me!"
